Pac-Man Route Planning: Ghost Behavior and Positioning
Pac-Man isn't just a dodge game โ it's a course in ghost psychology. Each of the four ghosts has a fixed personality and movement pattern; read them and you can predict the trap before it closes and calmly turn the tables. This guide takes you from "running for your life" to "clearing the maze on schedule."
How to Play
Steer Pac-Man through the maze eating every dot to clear the level, while four ghosts hunt you down. Touching a ghost in its normal state costs a life; after eating a power pellet, ghosts turn blue for a short window and can be eaten back, with each chain kill worth more. The warp tunnels on the left and right edges teleport you across the maze โ a natural escape valve. Ghost movement is never random: they alternate between scatter and chase modes on a fixed rhythm.
Pro Tips
- Know the four personalities: red Blinky always chases your current position; pink Pinky aims several tiles ahead of you; cyan Inky uses Blinky's position to flank from the side; orange Clyde chases close, then gets shy and retreats. Knowing who's hunting and who's blocking makes every move purposeful.
- Clear in whole zones: experts don't graze dot by dot. Split the maze into a few large regions and run a systematic "outer ring first, inner ring after" route, wiping each zone clean as you pass โ no wasted risky trips back for a handful of dots.
- Save power pellets for a crowd: the golden usage is waiting until Blinky and Pinky are both on your heels, then chomping down and eating two or three ghosts in one chain for maximum value. Nibbling one at the start is a waste.
- Tunnels are your safety valve: when squeezed from both sides, sprint for a bottom tunnel โ ghosts slow down inside it and you don't. Memorize both entrance positions; it's the most reliable lifeline on the board.
- Leave corner dots for later: the dots in the four corners are the hardest to collect, and diving in early gets you sealed in. Save them for after a power pellet so you have a countermeasure if things go wrong.
- Exploit the mode switch: at the instant ghosts switch between scatter and chase, they turn around and head for their home corners โ an absolutely safe window to cross the board. Learn the rhythm and cross boldly.
Common Mistakes
- Clearing corners first: diving into the deadliest corner at the start and getting boxed in by three ghosts. Fix: clean the open safe zones first; only enter corners with a power pellet as insurance.
- Sprinting in straight lines: long straight runs play straight into Pinky's ambush. Fix: favor sharp right-angle turns to shake pursuers โ ghosts lag on their turning decisions at intersections, and zigzags are escape gold.
- Ignoring the countdown: diving back into the pack as the power-pellet timer runs out. Fix: count the window mentally and pull out of danger a few seconds early.
Advanced Strategy
Pac-Man's deeper game is "phase exploitation": every round alternates between scatter and chase phases. The first few seconds of a round are scatter time โ experts use it to sprint into the most dangerous region; during chase time they tuck into safe routes and transition. Through the midgame, always keep "encirclement awareness": track how many tiles Blinky is behind you and whether Pinky has looped ahead โ the moment pressure comes from two sides, break toward a power pellet or a tunnel. Late game, Blinky goes into cruise speed and gets faster and faster; at that point give up on greed entirely, run tight closed loops to stall, and wait for the next power pellet to strike back. Remember one line: dots don't move, ghosts encircle. Plan a route that never gets surrounded first โ the dots are just a bonus you collect on the way.
